1. Liputan6.com has focused on conducting fact-checking since early 2018. In May 2018, we signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) related to Cekfakta.com, a fact-check collaboration with 22 news media and civil society (Mafindo): https://cekfakta.com/media
This momentum occurred a year before the 2019 election, which was marked by provocation, hate speech and disinformation. Cyber armies or 'buzzers' act on social media to benefit their political clients. As happened in the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election, identity politics was used to get voters.
In 2019, for the first time, the General Election Commission (KPU) was the target of disinformation. The effort to delegitimize the election commission was a serious problem because it could endanger Indonesia’s democracy.
Since July 2, 2018, Cek Fakta Liputan6.com (https://www.liputan6.com/cek-fakta) has been a signatory of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) code of principles.
At the end of 2019, we initiated Pegiat Cek Fakta Liputan6.com or WhatsApp Hoax-buster program to open opportunities for direct public participation in our fact-checking activities.
There are 15 groups (Jakarta, Jakarta 2, Jakarta 3, Sumatera 1, Sumatera 2, Sumatera 3, Bandung, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali, Solo, Jogja, East Java, Semarang, and Millenial Against Hoax) in 10 regions with more than 2,200 members.
The group members have the role of reporting suspicious information spreading on social media or chat apps and sharing fact-check content produced by Liputan6 in their respective WhatsApp groups.
2. Liputan6.com is committed to making the fact-checking program a top priority. We created a special team to debunk and prebunk misinformation and disinformation that spreads on social media and chat apps. The team consists of six persons: https://www.liputan6.com/info/redaksi.
- Edu Krisnadefa (edu.krisnadefa@kly.id) is the managing editor for the Cek Fakta Liputan6 channel (https://www.liputan6.com/cek-fakta). He also is responsible for managing our media literacy campaign and education program.
- Hanz Jimenez (hanz.jimenez@kly.id), Pebrianto Wicaksono (pebrianto.wicaksono@kly.id), Adyaksa Vidi Wirawan (adyaksa.wirawan@kly.id) are fact-checkers who verify and debunk false information circulating in social media. They also act as fact-check trainers to students and the general public.
- Diyah Naelufar (diyah.naelufar@kly.id) is a data analyst who provides data and metrics to measure the impact of our content.
- Karmin Winata (karmin.winata@kly.id) is a community manager responsible for managing Liputan6’s WhatsApp Hoaxbuster groups and creating new activities to involve the activists in our fact-check program.
There are also two supervisors for Liputan6.com’s fact-check operation:
- Irna Gustiawati (irna.gustiawati@kly.id) is the Editor in Chief of Liputan6.com. She is responsible for all operations in this organization, including fact-checking.
- Elin Yunita Kristanti (elin.yunita@kly.id) is the Deputy Chief Editor of Liputan6.com. She is responsible for supervising all fact-check operations, creating new programs, and expanding networking with other parties.
Our operation in 2022-2023 has been supported by six interns from various universities, including Universitas Padjajaran (Unpad) and other universities that participated in Kampus Merdeka, an internship program under the Ministry of Education and Culture.
Liputan6.com’s WhatsApp Hoax-buster activists also help our fact-check operation by distributing our verification content to their respective WhatsApp groups and social media.
3. Some studies say that misinformation and disinformation spread faster than the facts. We also face that challenge. Fact-check organizations, including Liputan6.com, search for effective strategies to deliver their fact-check content widely.
Since 2019, we have not only produced fact-check articles but also produced content in other forms, such as infographics, motion-graphics, videos, and even comics. The Liputan6.com’s fact check comic has received the GlobalFact 10 award from IFCN in the most creative content category: https://bit.ly/3Sn4KBw
We also hold fact-check training, namely the Virtual Class program (online) and Liputan6 Roadshow Fact Check, to educate the public so they can carry out verification independently. Link to a sample of the virtual class: https://bit.ly/3tXSwW2
We created a special segment, 'Semenit Melawan Hoaks’ (A Minute Against Hoaxes) in our news bulletin, Liputan6 Update, to convey our fact-checking results. Link to the video: https://bit.ly/3QenEIg
Liputan6.com also provides room for interfaith figures to campaign against hate speech in the 2024 Election: https://bit.ly/3MvEh0X
TikTok is currently the most popular platform among Indonesia's young generation, especially Generation Z. We are trying to produce 'snackable' fact-check videos to be published on the platform: https://bit.ly/3Slqqhm, https://bit.ly/3tXvMFB
4. The 2024 Indonesia General election will be fertile ground for the spread of misinformation, disinformation and hate speech. We will increase the capacity of fact-checkers by providing some training, including how to recognize and fight artificial intelligence (AI)-generated disinformations.
Liputan6.com will also ensure the safety of fact-checkers and journalists, including from possible doxing attacks during the election.
We will also increase cooperation and collaboration with our sister company, SCTV, members of WhatsApp Hoax-buster, and Cekfakta.com, including conducting live fact-checks during the presidential debates.
After the COVID-19 pandemic ends, Liputan6.com will focus on conducting fact checks and campaigns related to climate change. In June 2023, we launched the Liputan6 Climate Project as an effort to disseminate information about environmental issues in a way that is easy for people to digest.
In an effort to create persuasive content related to climate change, we have created our first song entitled, Together Can Do Better: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dsr2x1kV8Q and a special talk show program Climate Talk: https://bit.ly/3QIaLYz
We will continue to produce creative content related to climate change and anti-hoax campaigns.
We will also continue to promote our WhatsApp Business API or WhatsApp fact-checking chatbot to the broader community as an alternative tool to verify the information.

The fact-checking unit of Liputan 6 was set up in early 2018, one year before the 2019 Indonesian presidential election. It also became an IFCN signatory in July 2018.
It currently has six staff members at the fact-checking desk, including the managing editor of the desk: https://www.liputan6.com/info/redaksi.
Apart from publishing fact-check reports, Liputan 6 offers verification trainings, published a fact-check comic and short TikTok videos to give fact-check tips, etc.
It plans to carry out live fact-checks during the presidential debates during the 2024 election. Link to our methodology for fact checking:
https://www.liputan6.com/info/metode-cek-fakta
Explanation:
1. Verification is prioritized on claims relating to public interest, which are often urgent and could potentially be divisive, such as when a disaster or a major accident occurs.
In the midst of breaking news events such as the Hamas vs Israel or Ukraine vs Russia conflict, we carry out fact checks on claims that have the potential to provoke the public. Ahead of the election, the Liputan6 team fact-check also prioritizes verification on claims related to black campaigns or hate speech targeting the candidates and election commission.
2. Fact check research.
Research will be carried out with various methodologies as followed:
- Check the source or origin of the claim.
- If the news source comes from social media, the team will check the account. Is it verified? How about its consistency?
- Check the claim by comparing it with news from mainstream media, official websites of relevant institutions, or official social media accounts of related institution or person.
- Confirm directly to the person accountable or representative of the institution who is target of the hoax, as well as the authorities.
- Contact experts to help interpret data or the context of the problem.
- We do not use anonymous sources to do data verification.
- Use a number of tools available on the internet. For example, Google Reverse Images, Yandex, TinEye can be used to test the authenticity of images, and MapChecking is useful in testing claims about human density in a particular location.
3. Fact check article format.
Articles which have been verified on the fact check channel of Liputan6.com are presented in the following format:
- Claim: The first part of the article will discuss the source of the claim, and the narrative expressed by the claim maker.
- Verification: The second part of the article seeks to compare certain claims with the evidence found, as well as confirmation from related parties or authorities. Cek Fakta Liputan6.com seeks to provide literacy to readers by linking articles to official social media sites or accounts that are used as evidence.
All Fact Check articles published by Liputan6.com also contain information on how to use tools available on the internet, which can be utilised to verify certain claims. This is done as an effort to provide literacy for readers to fight hoax.
4. Claim conclusion
After the verification process is carried out by including supporting evidences, the Fact Check team will provide conclusion.
Conclusion, whether it is true or false, is based on the verification result.
