Cek Fakta - Liputan 6
02-Jun-2022 (2 years ago) Updated: 2 years ago

 1. Our fact-checking operation started in early 2018, one year ahead of the 2019 Presidential Election.

Liputan6.com decided to establish a fact-checking team to verify suspicious information virally on social media to stop spreading fake news and negative campaign. We also created Cek Fakta Liputan6.com or Liputan6 Fact-Check: https://www.liputan6.com/cek-fakta, a special channel on our site dedicated to combating misinformation and disinformation.

At that time, the Indonesian people were divided. Some politicians used hoaxes and hate speech as tools to gain the vote. During the 2014 Presidential Election and the 2017 DKI Jakarta Gubernatorial Election, the same situation happened.

Besides politics, misinformation related to health, such as “miracle cure”, was rampant on social media and WhatsApp groups. In the pre-COVID 19 pandemics, our fact-check team has already collaborated with health experts to debunk false claims related to health issues.

Since July 2, 2018, Cek Fakta Liputan6.com has been a signatory of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) code of principles.

2.  Our primary fact-check team consists of six people, namely 1 managing editor, 3 fact-checkers, 1 data analyst, and 1 community manager: https://www.liputan6.com/info/redaksi

- Edu Krisnadefa (edu.krisnadefa@kly.id) is a managing editor for the Liputan6 Fact-Check channel. He also is responsible for managing our fact-check campaign and media literacy campaign.

- Hanz Jimenez (hanz.jimenez@kly.id), Pebrianto Wicaksono (pebrianto.wicaksono@kly.id), Adyaksa Vidi Wirawan (adyaksa.wirawan@kly.id) are fact-checkers who verify and debunk false information circulating in social media. They also act as fact-check trainers to students and general public.

- Diyah Naelufar (diyah.naelufar@kly.id) is a data analyst who provides data and metrics to measure the impact of our content.

- Karmin Winata (karmin.winata@kly.id) is a community manager responsible for managing Liputan6’s WhatsApp Hoaxbuster groups.

Besides the team, there is also a supervisor for Liputan6.com’s fact-check operation:

- Elin Yunita Kristanti (elin.yunita@kly.id) is the Deputy Chief Editor of Liputan6.com. She is responsible for supervising all fact-check operations, creating new programs, and expanding networking with other parties.

Our operation in 2021-2022 has been supported by nine interns from various universities, especially Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN), which has fact-checking in its curriculum.

We believe that the war against fake news should involve direct public participation. That’s why we are committed to continuously giving media literacy and fact-checking knowledge to the general public.

At the end of 2019, we initiated Pegiat Cek Fakta Liputan6.com or WhatsApp Hoax-buster program to open opportunities for direct public participation in our fact-checking activities.

There are 15 groups (Jakarta, Jakarta 2, Jakarta 3, Sumatera 1, Sumatera 2, Sumatera 3, Bandung, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali, Solo, Jogja, East Java, Semarang, and Millenial Against Hoax) in 10 regions with around 2,000 members.

The group members have the role of reporting suspicious information spreading on social media or chat apps and sharing fact-check content produced by Liputan6 in their respective WhatsApp groups.

3. - Liputan6.com’s fact-check team is supported by Pegiat Cek Fakta or WhatsApp Hoax-buster activist. In May 2020, WhatsApp Hoax-buster was awarded funding from Coronavirus Fact-Checking Grant Program to increase the public awareness during the Covid-19 pandemic: https://bit.ly/38Giz9X

- Our team not only produces content in the form of articles. We also create videos, infographics, motion-graphics, podcast and comics. Link of sample fact-check video: https://bit.ly/3x5y2bN Link to comics: https://bit.ly/3Cfyjcw

- We also conduct media literacy targeting the general public, from students to mature generation. Two programs are Virtual Class and Liputan6 Fact-Checker Team Roadshow Program. We invite experts to debunk false claims spreading on social media in virtual class discussions. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when many people expressed their hesitancy to get vaccinated, we invited vaccinology Dr. Dirga Sakti Rambe as a regular speaker in our virtual class. Sample of virtual class: https://bit.ly/3ahSChs

In Roadshow Program, we collaborated with some universities, schools, and religious institutions to provide fact-check training and digital literacy to students and the public.

- We collaborated with Indonesia Community Radio Association (JRKI) to expand our campaign to remote areas in Indonesia. The offline campaign was supported by activists who held activities in some regions, from Papua to villages near the forest in Kalimantan.

- In June 2021, in collaboration with WhatsApp, Liputan6.com launched WA chatbot to fight fake news. The boot allows users to ask about the suspicious claim that goes viral on social media or look at the latest fact-check published by Liputan6.com. Link to our WA API: https://bit.ly/3GIUA6t

4. - Increase our fact-check capacity in debunking false news in social media and chat applications, significantly ahead of Indonesia 2024 Indonesia General Election. The election will be our focus after COVID-19.

- Maintain our virtual class program or online digital literacy program.

- Collaborate with our colleagues in cekfakta.com to do live fact-checking during the presidential candidate debate and election day.

- Empower our Pegiat Cek Fakta (WhatsApp Hoax-buster) members as local influencers by providing training to them and promoting their works in our publication. Their role is to do fact-check campaigns and give digital literacy to the public.

- We will produce more content to give our audience tips on how to avoid being victimized by the political hoax. We will publish the content in the article, video, and infographics.

- Our Roadshow program will try to invite some organizations, youth, or religious communities, to participate in anti-hoax and anti-hate speech campaigns.

- Promote our WhatsApp Business API or WhatsApp fact-checking chatbot to the broader community as an alternative tool to verify the information.

Since becoming one of the IFCN signatories in 2018, Liputan6.com has regularly produced fact-check content.

There are two types of articles we make. First, a fact-check article verifies suspicious information in social media and chat applications. Articles of this kind are indicated by the words "Cek Fakta:" in the title. Example: https://www.liputan6.com/cek-fakta/read/4970291/cek-fakta-tidak-benar-klaim-vaksin-pfizer-mengubah-dna-hati-manusia

The other is an article related to digital literacy or fact-check campaign. We also produce articles containing a collection of verifications related to certain topics. Example: https://www.liputan6.com/cek-fakta/read/4975034/kumpulan-hoaks-seputar-covid-19-sepekan-simak-faktanya

From May 2021-May to 2022, we produced more than 3,080 articles: https://bit.ly/3x7Gdpg. The number of content production per day can be seen in this index: https://www.liputan6.com/cek-fakta/indeks

Section 2: A commitment to Non-partisanship and Fairness

To be compliant on nonpartisanship and fairness, applicants must meet these five criteria

  • 2.1 The applicant fact-checks using the same high standards of evidence and judgement for equivalent claims regardless of who made the claim.

  • 2.3 The applicant discloses in its fact checks relevant interests of the sources it quotes where the reader might reasonably conclude those interests could influence the accuracy of the evidence provided. - Anti-China sentiments and religious sentiments are often used ahead of elections in Indonesia.

- Claims related to the distribution of prizes are spread on social media and chat applications. The goal is to deceive or steal personal data.

- The Liputan6.com fact check team verifies all claims according to the same methodology and are presented in a similar order: claim, verification, and conclusion.

Cek Fakta - Liputan 6
02-Jun-2022 (2 years ago) Updated: 2 years ago

Link to our methodology for fact checking:

https://www.liputan6.com/info/metode-cek-fakta

Explanation:

1. Verification is prioritized on claims relating to public interest, which are often urgent and could potentially be divisive, such as when a disaster or a major accident occurs.

In the midst of Covid-19 pandemic, claims that have the potential to endanger people's lives or health are prioritized. Ahead of the election, the Liputan6 team fact-check also prioritizes verification on claims related to black campaigns or hate speech.

2. Fact check research.

Research will be carried out with various methodologies as followed:

- Check the source or origin of the claim.

- If the news source comes from social media, the team will check the account. Is it verified? How about its consistency?

- Check the claim by comparing it with news from mainstream media, official websites of relevant institutions, or official social media accounts of related institution or person.

- Confirm directly to the person accountable or representative of the institution who is target of the hoax, as well as the authorities.

- Contact experts to help interpret data or the context of the problem.

- We do not use anonymous sources to do data verification.

- Use a number of tools available on the internet. For example, Google Reverse Images, Yandex, TinEye can be used to test the authenticity of images, and MapChecking is useful in testing claims about human density in a particular location.

3. Fact check article format.

Articles which have been verified on the fact check channel of Liputan6.com are presented in the following format:

- Claim: The first part of the article will discuss the source of the claim, and the narrative expressed by the claim maker.

- Verification: The second part of the article seeks to compare certain claims with the evidence found, as well as confirmation from related parties or authorities. Cek Fakta Liputan6.com seeks to provide literacy to readers by linking articles to official social media sites or accounts that are used as evidence.

All Fact Check articles published by Liputan6.com also contain information on how to use tools available on the internet, which can be utilised to verify certain claims. This is done as an effort to provide literacy for readers to fight hoax.

4. Claim conclusion

After the verification process is carried out by including supporting evidences, the Fact Check team will provide conclusion.

Conclusion, whether it is true or false, is based on the verification result.
