Check Your Fact

Organization: Check Your Fact
Applicant: Jesse Stiller
Assessor: Raymond Joseph

Background

Check Your Fact (CYF) is a dedicated fact-checking website owned and operated by the for-profit Daily Caller (DC) Inc. CYF is one of an increasing number of fact-checking organizations operating under the umbrella of for-profit media companies, in a sector that was previously dominated by non-profit, mainly donor-funded organizations.

Launched as a fact-checking unit of DC in 2017, CYF “evaluates the claims of politicians, issue-based advocacy groups, and prominent figures in the liberal and conservative media."

It is funded by The Daily Caller’s general news budget and revenue generated through advertising carried on the DC website, as well as some funding from Meta's third-party fact-checking program on Facebook and Instagram.

In its application to renew its International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) accreditation, CYF states that "advertising sold by the Daily Caller, Inc. is segregated from the staff of Check Your Fact in the same manner that any major news outlet divides its revenue operations from its editorial operations.” CYF itself, as is the norm with fact-checking websites, does not carry any advertising.

It has a full-time staff of eight, while Daily Caller staff and freelancers also do some fact-checking reports for CYF.

All DC and CYF staff, as well as freelancers who work for either of them, must sign an agreement enforcing a policy of non-partisanship which says, in part: “Political Activities: The writer agrees not to partake in any partisan political activity or other issues of advocacy during the term of this Agreement. The writer understands that any such political activity or advocacy could cause others to question their independence as a reporter.”

CYF far exceeded the number of fact-checks required by the IFCN for renewal of its accreditation, having published 742 fact-check articles between March 1, 2022, and August 30, 2022.

CYF emphasizes its non-partisanship both in its application and on its website.

It says: “Check Your Fact pursues a non-partisan mission of fact-checking public figures on both sides of the political spectrum. To ensure this, our writers have built out social media feeds on TweetDeck (Twitter) and CrowdTangle (Facebook) that track the statements made by both conservatives and liberals.

“Scanning sources across the political spectrum allows us to keep our claim selection neutral. We have one feed that tracks what Republican members of Congress are tweeting and another that follows the tweets of Democratic members; one that tracks conservative advocacy groups and another that follows liberal ones; etc. On Facebook, we have separate feeds for right-wing and left-wing pages.

This assessment has confirmed this non-partisanship based on its methodology in choosing and assessing claims and a random assessment of fact-checks published on the CYF website.

Assessment Conclusion

After making some relatively minor suggested tweaks for purposes of clarity and additional transparency, I am happy to recommend that Check Your Fact meets the required criteria for International Fact-Checking Network accreditation. It is especially pleasing to see more for-profit organizations setting up their own fact-checking units.

Check Your Fact
21-May-2022 (2 years ago) Updated: 1 year ago

Check Your Fact launched in 2017. Our non-partisan mission is to independently fact check public figures on both sides of the political spectrum, as well as to vet the many widely-shared claims that rocket across the internet every day.

Eight people work for Check Your Fact:, Jesse Stiller (Managing fact check editor), Max Kirsch (fact check editor), Joseph Casieri (fact check reporter), Elias Atienza (fact check reporter), Jonathan Fonti (fact check reporter), Anna Mock (fact check reporter), Christine Sellers (fact check reporter) and Morgan Johnson (data entry assistant). The fact check reporters identify, evaluate and write up fact-checkable claims, while the fact check editors edit and publish fact check articles, as well as assign stories. Our data entry assistant helps apply our rating to claims on Facebook and Instagram through our partnership with Meta.

Check Your Fact delivers informative fact check articles that provide readers with context and opposing points of view on topics that are newsworthy or of interest to its readers.

Our goals over the coming year include continuing to publish accurate, informative and well-rounded fact checks and growing our audiences on social media. We hope to boost the profile of our social media accounts to help increase the reach of our fact checks and highlight our work to more people.

Its fact-checks are published on its own website:   and also on the Daily Caller website:

Of interest is the Daily Caller's online show, The Facts.  (The most recent video was published in February 2022).

The Facts, according to the Daily Caller website "addresses some of the most misleading claims promulgated by high profile officials and so-called social justice warriors, to give Daily Caller readers the ammunition to tackle everyday political conversations and debates. Hosted by Brianna Lyman, these videos also seek to explore the truth that is often shrouded by corporate media."

Section 2: A commitment to Non-partisanship and Fairness

To be compliant on nonpartisanship and fairness, applicants must meet these five criteria

  • 2.1 The applicant fact-checks using the same high standards of evidence and judgement for equivalent claims regardless of who made the claim.
  • 2.2 The applicant does not unduly concentrate its fact-checking on any one side, considers the reach and importance of claims it selects to check and publishes a short statement on its website to set out how it selects claims to check.
  • 2.3 The applicant discloses in its fact checks relevant interests of the sources it quotes where the reader might reasonably conclude those interests could influence the accuracy of the evidence provided. It also discloses in its fact checks any commercial or other such relationships it has that a member of the public might reasonably conclude could influence the findings of the fact check.
  • 2.4 The applicant is not as an organization affiliated with nor declares or shows support for any party, any politician or political candidate, nor does it advocate for or against any policy positions on any issues save for transparency and accuracy in public debate.
  • 2.5 The applicant sets out its policy on non-partisanship for staff on its site. Save for the issues of accuracy and transparency, the applicant’s staff do not get involved in advocacy or publicise their views on policy issues the organization might fact check in such a way as might lead a reasonable member of the public to see the organization’s work as biased.

Criteria 2.1
Proof you meet criteria
Please share links to 10 fact checks published over the past year that you believe demonstrate your non-partisanship.
Please briefly explain how the fact checks selected show that (I) you use the same high standards of evidence for equivalent claims, (II) follow the same essential process for every fact check and (III) let the evidence dictate your conclusions.

Once a claim is chosen, we ensure that every article is balanced. Check Your Fact has dedicated editors who scrutinize each article for fairness, ensuring that opposing viewpoints and all relevant context are represented.

We often reach out to experts to make sure our research is thorough and fair and relies on reputable source material. This includes reports from nonpartisan government agencies, academic sources and research published by prominent think tanks. Our research methods range from phone interviews to sifting through academic papers, news reports and books. We rely on primary documents wherever possible.

Source material is hyperlinked extensively within the body of the article, and where a link is not available, the article tells readers where the information came from and the qualifications of the institution or individual who provided the content. Check Your Fact also uses graphs and charts to clearly illustrate the verdict as needed.

Once a writer completes a draft, he or she submits the article to the editors who check the content for accuracy, clarity and completeness. Updates are made as needed, followed by a final round of copy-editing prior to publication.

Check Your Fact pursues a non-partisan mission of fact-checking public figures on both sides of the political spectrum and popular but suspect claims circulating on social media. To ensure this, our writers have built out social media feeds on Tweetdeck (Twitter) and CrowdTangle (Facebook) that track the statements made by both conservatives and liberals.

Scanning sources across the political spectrum allows us to keep our claim selection neutral. We have one feed that tracks what Republican members of Congress are tweeting and another that follows the tweets of Democratic members; one that tracks conservative advocacy groups and another that follows liberal ones; etc. On Facebook, we have separate feeds for right-wing and left-wing pages.

We avoid fact-checking opinions or claims with ambiguous wording, and generally focus on claims that follow the news cycle, have been shared widely on social media, or have been made by prominent public figures. Check Your Fact strives to address claims that are extremely misleading or surprising, timely and may be of interest to readers.

Section 3: A commitment to Standards and Transparency of Sources

To be compliant on sources, applicants must meet these four criteria

  • 3.1 The applicant identifies the source of all significant evidence used in their fact checks, providing relevant links where the source is available online, in such a way that users can replicate their work if they wish. In cases where identifying the source would compromise the source’s personal security, the applicant provides as much detail as compatible with the source’s safety.
  • 3.2 The applicant uses the best available primary, not secondary, sources of evidence wherever suitable primary sources are available. Where suitable primary sources are not available, the applicant explains the use of a secondary source.
  • 3.3 The applicant checks all key elements of claims against more than one named source of evidence save where the one source is the only source relevant on the topic.
  • 3.4 The applicant identifies in its fact checks the relevant interests of the sources it uses where the reader might reasonably conclude those interests could influence the accuracy of the evidence provided.

Criteria 3.1
Proof you meet criteria
The assessor will review the applicant’s use of sources in a randomised sample of its fact checks to assess compliance. No additional evidence is required.

Section 5: A commitment to Standards and Transparency of Methodology

To be compliant on methodology, applicants must meet these six criteria

  • 5.1 The applicant publishes on its website a statement about the methodology it uses to select, research, write and publish its fact checks.
  • 5.2 The applicant selects claims to check based primarily on the reach and importance of the claims, and where possible explains the reason for choosing the claim to check.
  • 5.3 The applicant sets out in its fact checks relevant evidence that appears to support the claim as well as relevant evidence that appears to undermine it.
  • 5.4 The applicant in its fact checks assesses the merits of the evidence found using the same high standards applied to evidence on equivalent claims, regardless of who made the claim.
  • 5.5 The applicant seeks where possible to contact those who made the claim to seek supporting evidence, noting that (I) this is often not possible with online claims, (II) if the person who makes the claim fails to reply in a timely way this should not impede the fact check, (III) if a speaker adds caveats to the claim, the fact-checker should be free to continue with checking the original claim, (IV) fact-checkers may not wish to contact the person who made the claim for safety or other legitimate reasons.
  • 5.6 The applicant encourages users to send in claims to check, while making it clear what readers can legitimately expect will be fact-checked and what isn’t fact-checkable.

Criteria 5.1

Please provide a link to the statement on your website that explains the methodology you use to select, research, write and publish your fact checks.

We specifically state that, in order for a claim to be investigated, it must fit the following:

"a statement made in public, which can be attributed to a specific person (e.g. a politician or campaigner) or organization (e.g. a report, a social media post) or claims based on a research report);

an assertion or allegation that can be validated or refuted (to a degree);

On the contact page https://bit.ly/3WXhkHB consider adding: “Do you have a claim you’d like us to check? (or something similar”) with its own contact email address. It would also be helpful if people are able to submit links to tweets or news reports, and also be able to attach any relevant documents. (Doing it this way makes it easier to quickly assess whether to fact-check a claim, rather than have to follow up asking for info or evidence).

Alternatively, my preference would be to add a prominent tab on the site saying something like: “Do you have a claim you want us to check? (See how Africa Check handles it at the foot of their home page. >> https://africacheck.org/ and how Full Fact invites users to submit claims: https://bit.ly/3yWT2kC

These links are merely for guidance and suggested wording, and are not prescriptive of how CYF should invite users to submit claims for fact-checking.

On the Methodology, page add a section “What we can and can’t fact check” (see suggested wording below), as this will act as a filter to stop people submitting claims that you are unable to fact-check

Claims that are researched by Check Your Facts are done using publicly available sources. In order for us to research a claim, it must be:

* a statement made in public, which can be attributed to a specific person (e.g. a politician or campaigner) or organization (e.g. a report, a social media post) or claims based on a research report);

* an assertion or allegation that can be validated or refuted (to a degree);

* based on past or present actions (i.e. not speculative about the future);

  • 6.3 Where credible evidence is provided that the applicant has made a mistake worthy of correction, the applicant makes a correction openly and transparently, seeking as far as possible to ensure that users of the original see the correction and the corrected version.
  • 6.4 The applicant, if an existing signatory, should either on its corrections/complaints page or on the page where it declares itself an IFCN signatory inform users that if they believe the signatory is violating the IFCN Code, they may inform the IFCN, with a link to the IFCN site.
