We have ve added the reference that Code for Africa is registered as Civic Media Initiative in Kenya. The Data Zetu website is offline as their programme funding ran out, so we're adding an archive link to the website as it was, and the text on the About page states that the organization is defunct, meaning that it is no longer active.
We've updated the 'Our Principles' section of our site as advised, and the writers have also been included on the About Us page.
I hope this is sufficient. Let me know if there is anything else that we need to add/change.
Thanks again for the heads up on this.
Conclusion and recommendations
Henk van Ess wrote:
There is no mention on the website pesacheck.org codeforafrica.org or codeforkenya.org of Civic Media Initiative (Kenya) - the mother organisation applicant mentioned in application. This means applicant organisation does not offer evidence of its ties to a parent or umbrella organisation.
According to http://www.npo.gov.za/PublicNpo/Npo/DetailsPublicDocs/33619918 the applicant is filed away under the following category:
Law, Advocacy, and Politics > Civic and Advocacy Organizations > Civil rights associations Voluntary Association. We suggest to show that information on About page or ask gov.za to change the category.
We don't find always a source or a link to the information published.
The applicant says in https://pesacheck.org/our-principles-2e9c5a00ecb1 that one of the financial supporters is https://datazetu.or.tz (they provided this link). However, this site doesn't exist anymore.

The information supplied by applicant does not mention the International Budget Partnership or ICFJ, which is mentioned on https://pesacheck.org/is-kenya-likely-to-be-hit-by-a-cyclone-912c07ce85ae and https://twitter.com/pesacheck
PesaCheck is an initiative of Code for Africa, in partnership with the International Budget Partnership (Kenya), with additional support from the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ).
On https://pesacheck.org/about www.internationalbudget.org is mentioned and IBP mentions Pesacheck.
There is no mention on the website pesacheck.org codeforafrica.org or codeforkenya.org of Civic Media Initiative (Kenya) - the mother organisation applicant mentioned in application. This means applicant organisation does not offer evidence of its ties to a parent or umbrella organisation.

FALSE: DFCU Bank is not closing a third of its branches in Uganda
In a recent article https://pesacheck.org/false-dfcu-bank-is-not-closing-a-third-of-its-branches-in-uganda-8d987af95913 the document "Purpose and Scope of the Request for Proposal" is shown, but not explained what the source is or the direct link (we found one, to https://eagle.co.ug/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/RFP-Consultancy-services-for-relocation-of-selected-dfcu-Bank-branches-2019-1.pdf)
This is against own policy of applicant: "Any source documents used in the fact check need to be annotated and uploaded to sourceAfrica, including any additional useful data identified in the process of fact-checking."
That article is based on just one source: the bank itself says it's not closing 22 branches, as if this would be a fact. The bank says, the majority shares are held by a Dutch bank, Rabobank with some others, it's not closing the branches from 14th October 2019 on, but according to their OWN press release, they maybe do that later, check https://www.facebook.com/dfcugroup/posts/2368839653382194
"dfcu Bank has a network of 63 branches spread across the country. As we communicated at this year’s Annual General meeting in June, the Bank is in the process of implementing its digital strategy to drive better customer experience, improve efficiency and align its operations with emerging trends in the financial sector. This calls for continuous rationalisation of branch operations and redesigning of the Branch model"
The same method (somebody claims something, but the involved subject denies it) we see here: https://pesacheck.org/false-teaching-of-luganda-has-not-been-banned-in-ugandan-public-schools-beee51cfcde1
We urge the fact checker to not use the source denying the rumour, but find more sources, as they did in several other stories.
On https://pesacheck.org/false-these-photos-of-a-network-mast-on-fire-in-nigeria-are-not-from-2019-8870e294efc1 we don't understand the following claim:
These photos of a network mast on fire in Nigeria are not from 2019
FALSE
But the whole article is about that the photo was from 2015. Either they should have written:
These photos of a network mast on fire in Nigeria are not from 2019
TRUE
or
These photos of a network mast on fire in Nigeria are from 2019
FALSE

An article that we published looking into whether loan defaulters were being arrested in Kenya contained an erroneous link to an unrelated story that had been found using a reverse image search done on the photos included in the Facebook post being checked. We included an editor's note to explain that the article included was not as we had reported. https://pesacheck.org/false-these-images-do-not-show-loan-defaulters-being-arrested-in-kenya-334465525986
An article that we published looking into how much Kenya's central region contributes to the national GDP was published with estimates of the data rather than actual statistics. When the actual data was published, we chose to correct the information with an editor's note rather than changing the article entirely https://pesacheck.org/does-the-mt-kenya-region-contribute-60-of-kenyas-gdp-4b12b7287c22
