- 1.5 The applicant’s editorial output is not, in the view of the IFCN, controlled by the state, a political party or politician.
- 1.6 If the organization receives funding from local or foreign state or political sources, it provides a statement on its site setting out to the satisfaction of the IFCN, how it ensures its funders do not influence the findings of its reports.

1/ MAFINDO's fact-checking operation started as a grassroot debunking effort utilizing Facebook Forum at https://facebook.com/groups/fafhh/ at September 2015. We begun this effort due to the fact that the severity and volume of hoaxes kept on rising , and we thought that someone need to do something about this.
2/ We have 12 full time staff, about 500 local volunteers, and about 85 thousands online volunteers. The number & capacity of the available volunteers enable us to cover a lot of topics : public education, government advocacy, academic research, multilateral partnerships, public speaking at various national & international conferences, and of course debunking hoaxes everyday.
3/ We believe in a robust response, not a silver bullet. Therefore we try to cover as much grounds as possible - by mobilizing our volunteers and resources to do public education, government advocacy, academic research, multilateral partnerships, public speaking at various national & international conferences, build anti-hoax technologies, and of course crowdsourced fact-checking by our online community, which then help assist our professional fact-checker in doing their jobs.
4/ We aim to increase our organizational capacity by having a special Partnership manager. Currently our partnerships are handled by our HQ team and assisted by our Presidium, which works great with incoming partnership requests - but we lacked capacity to pursue / proactively build relationship with potential partners.
We also aim to increase our fact-checking capacity with help of various new , machine-assisted, anti-hoax tech we're currently building.

We choose which hoaxes to debunk by using 2 criterias : severity and urgency.
A hoax which is severe and critical, will be prioritized for immediate fact-check.
On the other hand, a hoax which is not considered harmful nor urgent, such as satire, etc; will be only debunked if deemed necessary and/or if we have spare resources to do so.

Because Mafindo deals with online claims, it is usually not possible for them to contact the people who make the claim. Contacting those who make the claim is rarely done due to safety or other legitimate reasons.

We actually, currently, are not encouraging our audience to send us claims to fact-check - because without even doing so, we are already drowning in these requests.
Thanks to our grassroot foundation, people know us and know how to reach us - and without asking, they are sending us the newest hoaxes they found from all around the Internet for us to fact-check
We got fact-check requests via email, Whatsapp, facebook messenger, instagram, and so on.
Thankfully this also help us to be always up to date on the latest situation, without spending too much effort and resources on media listening.

Section 6: A commitment to an Open & Honest Corrections Policy
To be compliant on corrections policy, applicants must meet these five criteria
- 6.1 The applicant has a corrections or complaints policy that is easily visible and accessible on the organization’s website or frequently referenced in broadcasts.
- 6.2 The policy sets out clear definitions of what it does and does not cover, how major mistakes, especially those requiring revised conclusions of a fact check, are handled, and the fact that some complaints may justify no response. This policy is adhered to scrupulously.
- 6.3 Where credible evidence is provided that the applicant has made a mistake worthy of correction, the applicant makes a correction openly and transparently, seeking as far as possible to ensure that users of the original see the correction and the corrected version.
- 6.4 The applicant, if an existing signatory, should either on its corrections/complaints page or on the page where it declares itself an IFCN signatory inform users that if they believe the signatory is violating the IFCN Code, they may inform the IFCN, with a link to the IFCN site.
- 6.5 If the applicant is the fact-checking unit of a media company, it is a requirement of signatory status that the parent media company has and adheres to an open and honest corrections policy.

Mafindo provided a number of examples of fact-check reports that have been corrected in the past year, usually when the officials updated their explanation in regards to the claim. When a correction is necessary, the applicant makes the correction openly and transparently, and ensures readers can see the correction and the corrected version.
