For the fact-checking project, Tirto does it in two formats. Firstly, the Fact-Checking format. This way, we directly asses the claims made by social and political actors, or claims made by general public with official data, scientific journals, and/or reliable sources. We do it real-time or through the fact-checking articles on our page (https://tirto.id/q/periksa-fakta-gnQ). Secondly, the live version. We carried out this project for the first time during the Jakarta gubernatorial election in 2017 (https://tirto.id/cek-fakta-debat-pilgub-dki-jakarta-2017-putaran-1-chqf). We did it again on the Presidential Election Debate in 2019 and posted it on our social media page (https://twitter.com/tirtoid/status/1085921085164417024).

We also have ‘Periksa Data’ format. This way, we publish articles that discuss social, political, and economic issue that are vastly talked in society. Our articles also backed by data and analysis from official sources, latest NGO report, and/or scientific journals. 'Periksa Data' have been published on our page (https://tirto.id/q/periksa-data-gqo) since January 2017.

During the Presidential Election in Indonesia in 2019, we placed our fact-checking product on our sites' homepage, in the category of "Hoaks atau Fakta Pemilu 2019" (https://tirto.id/berita-hoax-fakta-pemilu-2019-df9D).

Our fact-checking effort can be traced back to 2017, the same year we were launched. We believed at that time that there is a huge demand to establish a more robust fact-checking practice in the fast-paced information change. As a result, we are the first media company in Indonesia that applied for the IFCN signatory. We have archived our fact-checking project on a page on our website. Our fact-check articles can be found in the following tags:

https://tirto.id/q/periksa-data-gqo

https://tirto.id/q/periksa-fakta-gnQ

Tirto's fact-checking practice is under the responsibility of Tirto's Research Department. At the moment, there are one assigned fact-checker and one editor that are managing fact-checking practices. For the coming years, we are establishing collaborations with NGO to provide trainings for journalists and small-scale news organizations in areas of fact-checking and research-based journalism.

  • 2.2 The applicant does not unduly concentrate its fact-checking on any one side, considers the reach and importance of claims it selects to check and publishes a short statement on its website to set out how it selects claims to check.
  • 2.3 The applicant discloses in its fact checks relevant interests of the sources it quotes where the reader might reasonably conclude those interests could influence the accuracy of the evidence provided. It also discloses in its fact checks any commercial or other such relationships it has that a member of the public might reasonably conclude could influence the findings of the fact check.

Save for the issues of accuracy and transparency, the applicant’s staff do not get involved in advocacy or publicise their views on policy issues the organization might fact check in such a way as might lead a reasonable member of the public to see the organization’s work as biased.

Criteria 2.1

Please briefly explain how the fact checks selected show that (I) you use the same high standards of evidence for equivalent claims, (II) follow the same essential process for every fact check and (III) let the evidence dictate your conclusions.

Tirto ID
30-Mar-2022 (2 years ago) Updated: 2 years ago

When we approach fact-checking, we only refer to reliable sources. In our standard, we have three levels of sources. The first level is publicly available government data and companies' reports. The second one is intergovernmental organisations (eg: UN), international institutions (eg world banks, IMF), reliable consultants and research institutions, and top journals. The last one is the national news agency.

In cases related to the examination of facts related to issues, events, or political debates, we also conduct a confirmation to sources in accordance with journalism principles. Some examples can be read from the results of our articles by displaying the results of confirmation of key informants.

  • 5.5 The applicant seeks where possible to contact those who made the claim to seek supporting evidence, noting that (I) this is often not possible with online claims, (II) if the person who makes the claim fails to reply in a timely way this should not impede the fact check, (III) if a speaker adds caveats to the claim, the fact-checker should be free to continue with checking the original claim, (IV) fact-checkers may not wish to contact the person who made the claim for safety or other legitimate reasons.

We declare our fact-checking methodology on this page: https://tirto.id/insider/metodologiriset.

At the page, we are not only explaining the format of our fact-checking practice, but we also state the sources that we use in testing verifiable facts. We use three levels of sources and ensure that certain sources have been confirmed or re-checked. We only made conclusion in our fact-checking if two or more sources stated the same facts.

In each case, fact-checking involves various sources of issues/problems/chronology findings that we will explain in each published article. If We use various open-source tools, we also include a brief explanation of how we use them in the article.

In essence, we are open about what we do in our fact-checking practice. If we add some information or link to the source that we use, we are always stating it in each of our fact-checking articles.

It is usually not possible to contact people who make or share claims online, and there is also an issue of safety for fact-checkers to contact people who make or share the claims directly.

Please describe how you encourage users to send in claims to check, while making it clear what readers can legitimately expect will be fact-checked and what isn’t fact-checkable. Include links where appropriate. If you do not allow this, explain why.

In our 'metodologi riset' page (https://tirto.id/insider/metodologiriset), we also wrote down an email address (factcheck@tirto.id) of which people can send information, corrections, or additional information/claims related to fact-checking efforts to the address. We also state WhatsApp business number and email address in each of our fact-checking article to encourage readers to send claims to check.

If readers have suggestions, ideas, or responses in relation to the fact-checking activities, Tirto also openly receives them via our social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram).

Section 6: A commitment to an Open & Honest Corrections Policy

To be compliant on corrections policy, applicants must meet these five criteria

  • 6.1 The applicant has a corrections or complaints policy that is easily visible and accessible on the organization’s website or frequently referenced in broadcasts.
  • 6.2 The policy sets out clear definitions of what it does and does not cover, how major mistakes, especially those requiring revised conclusions of a fact check, are handled, and the fact that some complaints may justify no response. This policy is adhered to scrupulously.
  • 6.3 Where credible evidence is provided that the applicant has made a mistake worthy of correction, the applicant makes a correction openly and transparently, seeking as far as possible to ensure that users of the original see the correction and the corrected version.
  • 6.4 The applicant, if an existing signatory, should either on its corrections/complaints page or on the page where it declares itself an IFCN signatory inform users that if they believe the signatory is violating the IFCN Code, they may inform the IFCN, with a link to the IFCN site.
  • 6.5 If the applicant is the fact-checking unit of a media company, it is a requirement of signatory status that the parent media company has and adheres to an open and honest corrections policy.

Criteria 6.1
Proof you meet criteria
Please provide a link to where you publish on your website your corrections or complaints policy. If you are primarily a broadcaster, please provide evidence you frequently reference your corrections policy in broadcasts.

People can also find the procedure on how we handle all of the corrections, not only fact-checking, including the major ones, on our "Pedoman Media Siber" (https://tirto.id/insider/pedoman-media-siber).

So far, we have tried to rigorously maintain our standards only to publish articles that pretty much have definite conclusions. Therefore, it is quite rare for fact-checking articles to get a correction.

However, for real-time fact-checking effort, if we make a mistake, we will publish a correction article with correction information and still include the original (initial) link of the article as in the following example: https://tirto.id/koreksi-data-agus-ingin-menambah-800-an-sekolah-inklusi-ciPV

The applicant says that there were no request of corrections on any fact-check articles in 2021, and that it is quite rare for their fact checks to be corrected because they have a very high standard.
