1. The 2014 Presidential Election and the 2017 DKI Jakarta Regional Head Election, which are full of misinformation and negative campaigns prompted us to create Cek Fakta Liputan6.com or Liputan6 Fact-Check, https://www.liputan6.com/cek-fakta, a special channel in our site dedicated to combat misinformation and disinformation in the early 2018.
We believe that hoaxes and misinformation are threats to the society whether in the midst of elections, during disasters, pandemics, or in relation to the public health.
Liputan6.com realizes that the war against hoaxes cannot be carried out by journalists or fact-checkers alone. We believe that by providing literacy to the broader community, the fight against false news can be carried out massively and more effectively.
All of the articles on Liputan6.com are presented in systematic and structural ways, so our readers can replicate and perform the process of fact-checking by themselves.
Liputan6.com believes that fighting hoax and fake news could not be done alone, that is why we collaborate with other parties, media, and civil society.
Cek Fakta Liputan6.com is a member of Cek Fakta, a collaborative fact-checking and verification project in collaboration with the Google News Initiative, the Indonesian Cyber Media Association (AMSI), the Indonesian Anti-Slander Society (Mafindo), the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI), and 23 other news media: https://cekfakta.com/institusi/29
On July 2, 2018 Cek Fakta Liputan6.com has been verified as International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) signatories: (https://ifcncodeofprinciples.poynter.org/signatories). We also collaborate with Facebook to battle hoaxes being circulated on their platform.
In January 2020, we initiated Pegiat Cek Fakta Liputan6.com or WhatsApp Hoaxbuster program to open opportunities for direct public participation in our fact-checking activities. This program has proven to be very useful amid the global Covid-19 pandemic.
2. The Covid-19 pandemic was followed by “infodemic” or abundant information, both online and offline, which includes deliberate attempts to spread misinformation to undermine public health responses and advance alternative group or individual agendas. We realize that misinformation can cost lives.
Starting July 2020, Liputan6.com has increased the capacity of the news verification team from previously consisting of 3 members (1 writer, 1 editor, and 1 data analysis) to 7 members consisting of 1 managing editor, 2 editors, 2 authors, 1 data analysis, and 1 admin coordinator for WhatsApp Hoaxbuster group: https://www.liputan6.com/info/redaksi
The quantity of fact-check content has been increased not only to respond to misinformation related to Covid-19 but also false news related to religious sentiment ahead of the 2020 regional elections and the 2024 presidential election.
3. In addition to the fact-check articles, there are several activities carried out by Cek Fakta Liputan6.com:
Content Production
a. Production of articles verifying/debunking suspicious information circulating in internet and social media. We use many ways to track suspicious claims circulating on social media, including CrowdTangle and input from activists who join the WhatsApp Hoaxbuster groups. The title of the claim verification article begins with "Cek Fakta:" here is one of the examples: https://www.liputan6.com/cek-fakta/read/4410701/cek-fakta-tidak-benar-dalam-foto-ini-jokowi-dan-prabowo-datangi-rumah-rizieq-shihab-di-arab-saudi
b. Production of articles containing tips for tackling false news or related to the fact-checking method. Here is one of the examples: https://www.liputan6.com/cek-fakta/read/4410923/6-tips-mendeteksi-informasi-palsu-yang-tersebar-lewat-whatsapp
c. We produce videos related to fact-checking. Here is one of the examples: https://www.liputan6.com/cek-fakta/read/4415715/video-cek-fakta-kelamaan-pakai-masker-bisa-keracunan-co2 and https://www.liputan6.com/news/read/4355721/de-liput-ridwan-kamil-jadi-relawan-vaksin-covid-19 (animation version).
WhatsApp Hoaxbuster Program
In January 2020 Liputan6.com created Liputan6.com WhatsApp Hoaxbuster or Pegiat Cek Fakta Liputan6.com (screenshots from 14 WhatsApp Hoaxbuster groups attached).
WhatsApp Hoaxbuster is a collaboration between Liputan6.com as a media with the society to combat hoaxes which circulate in WhatsApp. This is the first of its kind in Indonesia.
Why WhatsApp? Misinformation and disinformation in Indonesia mostly spread on social media such as WhatsApp. The encrypted nature of WhatsApp makes it even harder for the fact-checkers to verify the circulating information within the app.
The WhatsApp Hoaxbuster groups create a room of discussion among the people from various backgrounds. The activists exchange the information that spreads in their private WhatsApp groups, join discussions, empower each other, and sometimes engage in debate.
Link to articles related to WhatsApp Hoaxbuster activities: https://www.liputan6.com/tag/pegiat-cek-fakta
This program also bridges interaction between the society and Liputan6.com newsroom (Collaboration flowchart between WhatsApp Hoaxbuster activists and Liputan6.com newsroom attached)
As October 2020, we were expanding the groups to 14 groups (Jakarta, Jakarta 2, Jakarta 3, Sumatera 1, Sumatera 2, Sumatera 3, Bandung, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali, Solo, Jogja, East Java, Semarang) in 10 regions with around 2,000 members.
In May 2020, Pegiat Cek Fakta Liputan6.com (WhatsApp Hoaxbuster) was awarded a funding from Coronavirus Fact-Checking Grant Program to increase the public awareness during the Covid-19 pandemic: https://www.poynter.org/fact-checking/2020/ifcn-and-facebook-distribute-another-300k-through-the-coronavirus-fact-checking-grants-and-will-support-8-projects/
Digital Literacy Program
Liputan6.com provides training and sharing the knowledge of fact-checking methods in the form of virtual classes and online discussions.
The goal is that WhatsApp Hoaxbuster activists can perform independent verification. This activity is also open to the broader community.
In online and virtual class discussions we invite academics, scientists, government officials, and the representation of tech companies who have a commitment to combat hoaxes
Here is the link of digital literacy training on September 27 2020: https://www.vidio.com/watch/2052375-inspirato-sharing-session-waras-di-era-posttruth-jawab-dengan-cek-fakta
4. On our 20th birthday (24 Augusts 2020), Liputan6.com released a new tagline: Setia pada Fakta (Liputan6 is always true to the facts). We are committed to maintaining and improving our fact-checking operations.
Our next goals in 2021:
1. Improve the quantity and quality of fact-checking products (articles, podcasts, videos, and infographics)
2. Increase the reach of fact-checking products by distributing them on social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok) and WhatsApp Hoaxbuster groups.
3. Expand the membership of WhatsApp Hoaxbuster activists and increase the groups.
4. Conduct fact-checking training or digital literacy training regularly every month.
5. Collaborate with the universities (Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta and Multimedia Nusantara University in Tangerang), institutions, and tech companies to improve the quality of this movement.
6. Explore the possibilities of using WhatsApp Business API to scale up the reach of Liputan6.com's fact-checking, therefore not just for the activist, but to include the general public.

Since becoming one of the IFCN signatories in 2018, Liputan6.com has regularly produced fact-check content.
The increase in content production in 2020 occurred in February, amid the massive circulation of misinformation related to Covid-19. In that month, we produced 105 contents.
The increase in quantity also occurred after we expanded the capacity of the fact-check team. We produced more than 300 content each in August, September, October and November 2020.
During October 2019 to November 29, 2020, we produced a total of 2,186 content. (proof of document attached)

Section 2: A commitment to Non-partisanship and Fairness
To be compliant on nonpartisanship and fairness, applicants must meet these five criteria
- 2.1 The applicant fact-checks using the same high standards of evidence and judgement for equivalent claims regardless of who made the claim.
- 2.2 The applicant does not unduly concentrate its fact-checking on any one side, considers the reach and importance of claims it selects to check and publishes a short statement on its website to set out how it selects claims to check.
- 2.3 The applicant discloses in its fact checks relevant interests of the sources it quotes where the reader might reasonably conclude those interests could influence the accuracy of the evidence provided. It also discloses in its fact checks any commercial or other such relationships it has that a member of the public might reasonably conclude could influence the findings of the fact check.
- 2.4 The applicant is not as an organization affiliated with nor declares or shows support for any party, any politician or political candidate, nor does it advocate for or against any policy positions on any issues save for transparency and accuracy in public debate.
- 2.5 The applicant sets out its policy on non-partisanship for staff on its site. Save for the issues of accuracy and transparency, the applicant’s staff do not get involved in advocacy or publicise their views on policy issues the organization might fact check in such a way as might lead a reasonable member of the public to see the organization’s work as biased.
Criteria 2.1
Proof you meet criteria
Please share links to 10 fact checks published over the past year that you believe demonstrate your non-partisanship.
Please briefly explain how the fact checks selected show that (I) you use the same high standards of evidence for equivalent claims, (II) follow the same essential process for every fact check and (III) let the evidence dictate your conclusions.

Here is the compilation:
10. Anti-omnibus law protests took place in some regions of Indonesia in October 2020. Several claims which spread on social media heated the situation.
Here is the compilation of articles:
Explanation:
1. Either false or true claims are selected to later be verified.
Verification is prioritized on claims relating to public interest, which are often urgent and could potentially be divisive, such as when a disaster or a major accident occurs.
In the midst of Covid-19 pandemic, claims that have the potential to endanger people's lives or health are prioritized.
2. Fact check research.
Research will be carried out with various methodologies as followed:
- Check the source or origin of the claim.
- If the news source comes from social media, the team will check the account. Is it verified? How about its consistency?
- Check the claim by comparing it with news from mainstream media, official websites of relevant institutions, or official social media accounts of related institution or person.
- Confirm directly to the person accountable or representative of the institution who is target of the hoax, as well as the authorities.
- Contact experts to help interpret data or the context of the problem.
- Do not use anonymous sources to do data verification.
- Use a number of tools available on the internet. For example, Google Reverse Image can be used to test the authenticity of images, and MapChecking is useful in testing claims about human density in a particular location.
3. Fact check article format.
Articles which have been verified on the fact check channel of Liputan6.com are presented in the following format:
- Claim: The first part of the article will discuss the source of the claim, and the narrative expressed by the claim maker.
- Tracing facts: The second part of the article seeks to compare certain claims with the evidence found, as well as confirmation from related parties or authorities. Cek Fakta Liputan6.com seeks to provide literacy to readers by linking articles to official social media sites or accounts that are used as evidence.
All Fact Check articles published by Liputan6.com also contain information on how to use tools available on the internet, which can be utilised to verify certain claims. This is done as an effort to provide literacy for readers to fight hoax.
4. Claim conclusion
After the verification process is carried out by including supporting evidences, the Fact Check team will provide conclusion.
Conclusion, whether it is true or false, is based on the verification result

Some examples of right of reply articles:
Right of Reply from Ratu Tatu Chasanah, candidate for regent in Serang, about the complaint from various labor groups which claimed they had difficulties in meeting her. The Right of Reply was published after a mediation process with the Press Council. Liputan6.com apologized for the partiality of the published news.
The right of reply from a chemical company PT Petrona Intl Chemindo for the article titled '15 elementary school students in Surabaya Poisoned by Fan-Shaped Candies.'
The Right of Reply was published after a mediation process at the Press Council. Liputan6.com gave its apology.
Another right of reply article was published for a fact-check article titled: Fact-Check: Is It True A Number of Countries Ended Lockdown after Advice from the World President?
The article was updated by adding the statement from Hudi Wantoro, the Program Director from The World Peace Committee. Nevertheless, his statement did not change our conclusion as there was no proof about "the World President" which was claimed to be held by HE Mr. Djuyoto.
