Disinformation hurts democracy. That is why Infoveritas began verifying disinformation in November 2021. Since then, INFOVERITAS has verified 125 claims of interest to society.

Our objective is reduce disinformation, and fight for the right to information, so as to ensure the protection of democracy and increase trust in democratic institutions. INFOVERITAS believes that fact-checking is important to help citizens make their own informed decisions.

INFOVERITAS is focused on verifying disinformation related to Spain’s politics and society.

Our organization is made up of a multidisciplinary team of experts who are specialists in detecting fake news in different languages and on different platforms: television, radio, print and digital newspapers, but, above all on social media, which is the perfect environment for the mass diffusion of unverified information.

Our team is composed of journalists, academics and experts in artificial intelligence. We also have two volunteers who support and help detect potential fake news and check verifications before publishing them on our web page.

In the following paragraphs, we provide information about the different roles of our staff:

CARLA PINA - DIRECTOR

Ms. Pina, as director of INFOVERITAS, is ultimately responsible for deciding on verifications and reviewing texts before they’re published on the website.

In addition, she coordinates the team's collaborators, sets goals and guidelines, conceptualizes plans for projects and campaigns, determines media strategies, ensures the company's effective media presence and brand reputation management, while looking for partnerships with companies and organizations.

Finally she shares the project with different audiences, potential customers, public institutions, private companies and readers, while exploring funding sources to make the project viable in the short, medium and long term.

DAVID LÓPEZ - IA EXPERT

Mr. López is a data scientist and expert in artificial intelligence and natural language processing. He currently contributes to Infoveritas' mission by developing artificial intelligence-intensive services for real-time conversation analysis.

CRISTINA MORÓN - FACT-CHECKER

Ms. Morón looks for new hoaxes to debunk on INFOVERITAS, and is responsible for writing the corresponding verifications. She is also in charge of looking for partnerships with different institutions and companies. At the same time, Cristina is responsible for the company's invoicing.

She also raises the project’s visibility through press releases.

VIRGINIA SESEÑA - Social Media

As head of social networks at INFOVERITAS, Virginia searches for hoaxes, fake news and disinformation on social networks. Virginia is in charge of designing the website, as well as ensuring its functionality.

She is also in charge of responding to requests, verification suggestions and comments that readers send to INFOVERITAS through social networks and the contact mailbox.

COLLABORATORS

FRANCISCO LUIS MACHIN - IA EXPERT

Francisco Luis Machín is the Global Chief Data and Analytics Officer at IE.

With more than 12 years of experience as a strategic advisor, he has reached VP positions in leading strategic consultancy firms. His professional profile is in the intersection between strategy and technology.

He has worked in different sectors reshaping telco, utilities, energy, banking and education industries through digital transformation.

Mr. Machín received his master’s degree in Telecommunication Engineering with a double degree from the Escuela Politecnica de Elche and the Grand École ENSEIRB in Bordeaux. He holds an Executive MBA degree from IE and a Master in Management and Consulting from INSEAD.

He helps the INFOVERITAS team with advice related to its business model, data strategy, technology deployment and commercial development.

DANIEL LL. BARRABÉS – SENIOR JOURNALIST

Mr. Barrabés is an editorial volunteer. He is an experienced journalist and expert in radio, television and digital media, having worked forAntena3 Radio, Antena3 TV, Grupo Zeta, among other groups. He advises INFOVERITAS on content and he is also responsible for correcting texts before they are published on the website. In addition, he provides ideas for new concepts to be developed and recommends new alternatives for digital media verification.

Unfortunately, disinformation is here to stay. INFOVERITA’S objective this year is to safeguard the truth by providing reliable information to protect the public from disinformation, and to minimize the spread and impact of disinformation, thereby helping reduce polarization in our society and develop critical thinking.

In addition, INFOVERITAS intends to offer its verification service to public institutions and private companies to protect democracy.

We believe education is also crucial to reduce the impact of disinformation. With this in mind, one of our goals is developing educational programs to invite citizens to develop critical thinking.

INFOVERITAS has published more than one fact check per week in the last six months. The following criteria were used to select the claims: virality, hazard and public interest.

In order to verify that there are no more than five verification media in Spain with the IFCN certificate, we consulted Poynter Institute. Their response was as follows:

Dear Carla,

Thank you for taking interest in the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN). I am the Program Manager at IFCN. I would like this email to be a brief introduction to who we are and what we do here at IFCN.

The number of organizations in Spain as you stated is 4. This means you would have to show at least 6 months of fact-checks before applying.

When this assessment was performed, in March 2023, Infoveritas had completed seven months of activity under legal status, since its setting up in July 2022. Over that period of time, the applicant had published up to 80 fact-checks, thus reaching an average of three fact-checks published a week. At the time of submitting its application, there were four fact-checking organizations signatories of IFCN in Spain, so the condition of "6 months of fact-checking before applying" was sufficient for Infoveritas.

Section 2: A commitment to Non-partisanship and Fairness

To be compliant on nonpartisanship and fairness, applicants must meet these five criteria

  • 2.1 The applicant fact-checks using the same high standards of evidence and judgement for equivalent claims regardless of who made the claim.
  • 2.2 The applicant does not unduly concentrate its fact-checking on any one side, considers the reach and importance of claims it selects to check and publishes a short statement on its website to set out how it selects claims to check.
  • 2.3 The applicant discloses in its fact checks relevant interests of the sources it quotes where the reader might reasonably conclude those interests could influence the accuracy of the evidence provided. It also discloses in its fact checks any commercial or other such relationships it has that a member of the public might reasonably conclude could influence the findings of the fact check.
  • 2.4 The applicant is not as an organization affiliated with nor declares or shows support for any party, any politician or political candidate, nor does it advocate for or against any policy positions on any issues save for transparency and accuracy in public debate.
  • 2.5 The applicant sets out its policy on non-partisanship for staff on its site. Save for the issues of accuracy and transparency, the applicant’s staff do not get involved in advocacy or publicise their views on policy issues the organization might fact check in such a way as might lead a reasonable member of the public to see the organization’s work as biased.

Criteria 2.1
Proof you meet criteria
Please share links to 10 fact checks published over the past year that you believe demonstrate your non-partisanship.
Please briefly explain how the fact checks selected show that (I) you use the same high standards of evidence for equivalent claims, (II) follow the same essential process for every fact check and (III) let the evidence dictate your conclusions.

To further guarantee this impartiality, we always use the same methodology in our articles. We use multiple sources to verify claims and draw on leading experts in the relevant fields. The non-partisanship of Infoveritas has been sufficiently demonstrated by providing, as requested, ten examples of fact-checks to Spanish politicians and royal family members, as well as some other topics not related to politics. Beyond these ten examples, the assessor himself has performed a review of additional fact-checks covering claims about political parties and leaders of all the political spectrum in Spain. Drawing on this broad review, the assessor has not found cases of infringement of this criterion.

  • 3.2 The applicant uses the best available primary, not secondary, sources of evidence wherever suitable primary sources are available. Where suitable primary sources are not available, the applicant explains the use of a secondary source.
  • 3.3 The applicant checks all key elements of claims against more than one named source of evidence save where the one source is the only source relevant on the topic.

In a first round of assessment of this criterion, the applicant was invited to make the improvements detailed below:

The information provided by the applicant in this criterion mentions for the first time in its application some links with the company Agranda SL, describing it as the "main partner of Infoveritas". However, according to the information available in BORME, Agranda SL is not only a partner, but actually the sole administrator (administrador único) of Infoveritas Verifica SL. All in all, as requested in the assessment of several previous criteria, more clarification would be advisable about the nature and extent of the corporate relations between the publishing company of Infoveritas and Agranda SL.

As required, the applicant has expanded the information on its ownership scheme, which now is comprehensive and publicly disclosed in their 'About us' page (Quiénes somos). Thanks to these improvements, the assessment of this criterion is positive.

Every day, INFOVERITAS holds an editorial meeting attended by the entire team to propose and select the topics that should be verified, always according to the criteria of our methodology: public interest, hazard and virality. This means we make our own decisions about our fact-checking and how we report them.

Editorial control is exercised by the director of the website, Carla Pina, who ultimately decides which articles are published on the website.

As regards the contact by email (info@info-veritas.com), it is disclosed only in the Privacy policy (Política de privacidad) page, a quite hidden page for the average user. This is a lack of accessibility that should be improved. Also, as indicated in the assessment of criterion 4.4, staff members' emails or other alternative direct means of contact are not openly disclosed. Although the preference for an online form as a means of contact is understandable, the applicant is invited to allow also an easier contact by email.

To be compliant on methodology, applicants must meet these six criteria

  • 5.1 The applicant publishes on its website a statement about the methodology it uses to select, research, write and publish its fact checks.
  • 5.2 The applicant selects claims to check based primarily on the reach and importance of the claims, and where possible explains the reason for choosing the claim to check.
  • 5.3 The applicant sets out in its fact checks relevant evidence that appears to support the claim as well as relevant evidence that appears to undermine it.
  • 5.4 The applicant in its fact checks assesses the merits of the evidence found using the same high standards applied to evidence on equivalent claims, regardless of who made the claim.
  • 5.5 The applicant seeks where possible to contact those who made the claim to seek supporting evidence, noting that (I) this is often not possible with online claims, (II) if the person who makes the claim fails to reply in a timely way this should not impede the fact check, (III) if a speaker adds caveats to the claim, the fact-checker should be free to continue with checking the original claim, (IV) fact-checkers may not wish to contact the person who made the claim for safety or other legitimate reasons.
  • 5.6 The applicant encourages users to send in claims to check, while making it clear what readers can legitimately expect will be fact-checked and what isn’t fact-checkable.

Infoveritas openly discloses its fact-checking methodology (Metodología), which is deemed sound and reliable. The methodology explains that claims can be labeled as  false (falso), deceptive (engañoso) or without evidence (sin pruebas). Surprisingly though, it doesn't foresee any labels to qualify the statements that turn out to be true. The applicant is kindly invited to consider adding such positive labels for the cases where fact-checks lead to confirm the claims.
